Pour son troisième CD de “jazz”, Larry Tomko a choisi de tenir un pari présumé intenable: appareiller un jazz “cool” avec une instrumentation où domine l’orgue hammond, cet engin habituellement réservé à un genre appelé “soul” ou ”funky”. Cultiver ce paradoxe, telle est ici l’ambition de Tomko.
“is that jazz?”, s’interrogeait Larry dans son précédent opus. La mise en oeuvre du présent CD apporte une réponse rassurante à la question!
Le trio: Tomko: sax et chant, Benoit Ribiére: l’orgue hammond et Yvan Capelle: batterie, fonctionne a merveille avec un naturel réjouissant, un swing indéniable, ce fluide insaisissable, qui est l’apanage et la marque du jazz authentique.
“It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing” affirmait Duke Ellington. Le trio de Tomko confirme cette adage avec brio! Ajoutons que Tomko se révèle ici un chanteur remarquable, donnant à cet œuvre une dimension “aimable” qui devrait toucher un large public.
